About

Penguin Watch is an ongoing, live project; an active team of researchers based at the University of Oxford is using the data produced to examine penguin population dynamics, and better understand the way in which colonies are responding to various threats (e.g. fishing activity and climate change). We can use every one of your clicks to investigate penguin numbers, survival, and the timing of key events in the penguin yearly cycle, such as egg-laying and we use these to investigate threats across penguins' ranges by comparing populations with different threat levels.

Ultimately, we believe that our research will feed directly into policy as we build evidence to determine important regions for penguins and highlight specific colonies of concern. There is growing support for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) around parts of the Antarctic Peninsula, which would help protect penguins by managing human activities. Images taken throughout the year at multiple locations provide the ability to answer a range of interesting questions.
Specifically, we aim to:
1.) Determine chick survival and breeding success, and how this varies across species ranges and between years
2.) Identify the causes of chick mortality (e.g. predation in the colony versus parents abandoning chicks)
3.) Record changes in the timing of breeding (e.g. arrival date, fledging date) and how this is affected by environmental conditions

Wondering if you should register to volunteer? Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions:
  1. Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.

  2. Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, we ask you not to register. We are doing all we can to align with best practices and keep our community healthy.
