Achievement Connections

About

The Schools of Hope elementary tutoring program has its origins as a civic journalism project of the Wisconsin State Journal and WISC-TV in 1995. United Way of Dane County then began a program called Schools of Hope. Initially it was a partnership to improve the academic performance for third grade reading in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). Because of Schools of Hope's success in improving reading skills for elementary students, the program was expanded in 2003 to include middle school and high school math and reading programs. Over the years the program has developed. At the high school level, the program has been reinvigorated and reintroduced as Achievement Connections with the goal of increasing the number of students who complete algebra by 10th grade. Completion of algebra by 10th grade is one of the leading indicators that a student will graduate from high school. We are looking for caring and dedicated tutors that can commit to at least two hours of tutoring a week for one semester or more to students enrolled in the program and are proficient in algebra and geometry. Tutoring sessions model good study habits by being focused and paced to students' needs. The sessions may focus on only class work and/or basic skills development. All tutors will receive a comprehensive tutoring manual and on-going support and guidance from the volunteer coordinator.
