About the MAPS Program & the Team Lead Role:
Since 2010-2011, Portland State has partnered with Together We Are Greater Than and Alder Elementary to match college student mentors with elementary students. Alder Elementary School has a large population of students who face economic barriers in a diverse multilingual and multicultural area. MAPS aims to strengthen and cultivate students’ aspirations for future career and/or university achievement at an early age. In addition to helping mentees through one-on-one support in the classroom, mentors build strong relationships with their mentees through engaging, fun conversations and activities around college, higher education, and careers as weekly lunchtime “college buddies.” Transportation is provided from the PSU campus by student staff and/or leads. The MAPS program is hosted by the Student Community Engagement Center, a hub for civic engagement at Portland State University.
Regular student mentors are oriented and trained during Fall term and, starting in January, meet with their elementary-age mentees for two terms (Winter & Spring). Mentor sessions take place once a week both in the classroom and 1:1 during the lunch hour, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays between 9:30 - 2:00pm (exact timeframe TBD but it will fall within those hours). Mentors serve as role models, help in the classroom, engage their mentees in conversation and activities, support students in developing confidence and social skills, and talk about what it means to go to college and think about future careers.
Mentor Team Leads serve for all three terms (Fall, Winter, Spring) to help recruit, onboard, train, and then support their student mentor teams, in addition to serving as a mentor themselves.
