*****
Store to Door envisions the Portland area to be a community where all seniors and people with disabilities are nourished, included, and can age with dignity in the setting of their own choice. Having a PSU student leader supporting our work as a volunteer for 4-6 hours per week while additionally promoting our organization, mission, vision, and volunteer opportunities on the PSU campus would be a massive benefit. We are able to offer a high degree of independence and leadership for students. We are ready and willing to learn about the student and understand their unique vision, goals, and hopes so that we can tailor leadership opportunities to their specific needs.
The SLS Member will have the opportunity to support all areas of Store to Door's Program and Volunteer Team. This includes:
-
supporting the team in the office to prepare for weekly program operations
-
working directly with clients as an Order Taker, Friendly Caller, or Delivery Driver
-
supporting the Resource Referral Team in outreaching to clients who need community referrals
-
supporting the volunteer team at volunteer outreach events and in the store while working with volunteers during program operations
-
supporting the Food Box Team with set up, food box packing, and engaging with food box volunteers
-
supporting our Client Outreach Team in providing tabling and presentations.
All of these opportunities will be available to an SLS student and they will have the opportunity to engage with the activities that most interest them and best fit their schedule. Each of the activities directly support our work with clients. By engaging in these activities the students will have a direct impact on our client's ability to live independently in a setting of their choice. An administrative task, such as helping to prep monthly birthday cards for clients, supports the agency mission by reducing social isolation our clients experience and increasing community connection. A Program Team task, such as calling clients to get their weekly grocery order, supports the agency mission to decrease social isolation by offering a person-to-person interaction as well as supports the agency mission to ensure that clients have access to the food, household supplies and prescriptions they need to stay healthy and housed safely. A Volunteer Team task, such as assisting with a community volunteer presentation, supports the agency mission by engaging new volunteers who will deliver these essential services.
Modality: Most positions require in-person service, but some positions may have remote options.
Skills and Knowledge Required: The most important quality is a desire to serve elders and people living with disabilities. We are ready and willing to provide training, coaching, and onboarding to ensure that our SLS student has the necessary skills for all duties assigned. An SLS member would be 'ahead of the game' if they were familiar with local community services, have good communication skills, and are enthusiastic learners.
Onboarding and Training: SLS students will receive volunteer orientation which will familiarize them with roles they may have at the agency including training to take orders, do friendly calling, or assist with administrative tasks. Background checks are required for this position. We will do further orientation over 2-4 weeks in all areas that the SLS student will engage with and this orientation will be tailored to the student's areas of interest and availability.
Benefits of this Positions: Students can expect to develop and improve interpersonal skills, empathy, communication, learn about local resources and services, learn about the needs of seniors and people living with disabilities, join in with volunteer engagement and recruitment, client outreach and intake, and proactive client engagement. All of these skills will serve students in their future education and career by preparing them for future careers and workplaces. This will also benefit students as it will deeply connect them to a population that is historically underserved and underrepresented in our community.
Supervision: The SLS would report to Cassie Listro if they are interested in program operations and Linda Fahrenkopf if they are interested in volunteer program activities.
Location & Transportation: Service location would vary depending on the student's interest and preference and could take place at:
