Prep Books for Kids with the Children's Book Bank (PSU Serve Your City)

Listed by Student Community Engagement Center

About

Love reading? Want to make sure young kids get the opportunity to own books? Join PSU's Student Community Engagement Center to volunteer your time and energies at the Children's Book Bank!

During this opportunity, you will help to clean and spruce up gently used community-donated children's books, which will later be distributed to low-income preschool children in the Portland area! Specific tasks include wiping covers, taping torn pages, erasing scribbles, covering inscriptions, and reinforcing worn spines. A typical volunteer session includes a welcome, introductions, an overview of the Book Bank and book cleaning instructions, and then the book cleaning itself, followed by a reflection.

The book gap: For children in poverty, one of the biggest obstacles to literacy development (which begins at birth) is the scarcity of books in the home. While the ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child, the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is a mere 1 book to 300 children.

The Children's Book Bank narrows the book gap by providing the community with a place for families to donate the books their children have outgrown, moving thousands and thousands of children's books into the homes of kids in need.

Getting There: Volunteers will have the option of meeting at PSU to travel together via the bus & walking to the Children's Book Bank. The actual project is from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm; please indicate in your registration if you'd like to meet us there directly or whether you'd like to meet on campus at the PSU Urban Center/SW 6th & Montgomery at 1:50 pm to take the bus over with the group.
Location: 480 NE 9th Ave, Portland, OR 97212
Come make a big impact on kids in need and have fun sprucing up books with fellow PSU students!

This project is open specifically to Portland State University students through the Student Community Engagement Center's #serveyourcityserveyourcampus program.
